Storytelling: When Rich is Poor

So, we always say storytelling is so important and a good visualization supports the story which is being told and in the end this supports understanding, right? But how rich and animated can a story be? Is there perhaps an upper limit?

Take for example this awesome videos by Jason Silva. They are simply fantastic. Fascinating. Captivating. But do they actually support the story which is being told? Do they ease understanding and content consumtion or is it simply... well, art - exempt from meaningfulness?
